Inspired by tonight’s weather. The sky was this weird grey-purple.

I recently got an Intuos4 tablet! Here are a few sketches I’ve done to get acquainted with it…

Clips from the iron pour and breaking the piece from the mold afterwards. The pour was a hot 8-9 hour day of work, but it was 98% fun work.

Raw casting of the head and one of the ears.

Going over certain points with a flex-shaft to make them smoother, pop out more, and dig out flaws from the casting.

Trying to figure out the proportions of the steel sheet I’m cutting antler segments out of…

Welding the ears on with nickel rod. This is tricky and I’ll have to do a lot of cleanup with the flex-shaft/Dremel.

A small, hand-sized maquette/mock-up of my project for my metal casting/welding class. The project must consist of both cast iron (head) and welded steel (antlers) components. Cardboard, sculpey and silk.

Rendering a larger version in clay to be molded and then cast in iron next week.

Clay head and wax ears ready to go. The ears will have to be cast separately and then welded onto the skull later (like the antlers).

Some of my favorite drawings from the second half of my life drawing class.

This last one is from a two-day session where we had to draw the model as she changed positions in the room.

More snakes

May 2, 2011

A half-successful attempt at etching/drawing in soapstone. Some stones took etching well, others had too much quartz inclusion for delicate marks. I’ll have to get more stones like the grey one (bottom row at the left) if I want to be super-precise. Each stone is about 4″x4″.

Underlying sketch for a much larger drawing I’m working on.

My first mylar experience–a jumble of Guam memories for drawing class. 18″x24″

Life Drawing

February 24, 2011

A handful of drawings–almost all from my current Life Drawing class.

I’m back from Winter Break and starting a new semester–this one full of drawing classes. In the meantime, here’s some conceptual/unused stuff from Propolis that I haven’t posted.

A lithograph that looked great on the stone, but not so much when printed on paper (my fault).

From the first few days of my Printmaking class. I was bored with one woodcut I was working on, so I started chipping away at another block of wood and liked the result.

The model drawing for my Mutation piece.

I intended to do another sculptural piece consisting of two of these bee-things climbing up the wall, but I ran out of time (and space).
